During Obama’s speech today on healthcare, Congressman Joe Wilson yelled “You lie!” drawing strong criticism from both sides of the isle. Joe was referring to Obama’s statement that illegal immigrants would not be covered under the new public healthcare option that Obama is proposing.
The statement is as follows:
“There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false. The reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.”
This is a difficult situation for me, but I am firm in my opinion.
The problem stems from the simple fact that Republicans tried to add a firm clause to the bill that specifically banned illegal immigrants from benefiting from the public healthcare option and the resulting landslide democrat vote that canned the amendment to the bill. I completely understand Mr. Wilson’s desire to make a point that Obama was lying and the rage he must have felt inside as Obama sat there on national TV and lied with a straight face. This bill as is stands to be signed will most definitely cover illegal aliens!
However, this is the President of the United States. The office needs to be respected, even if the man holding it is not. There is also the issue of respect for others. Lastly, what are we teaching our children in an elected official to a congressional seat can not control himself in such a situation. We expect our kids to behave in school, or church, or in a public situation. We can’t hold them to the same standards if we can’t hold ourselves to those same standards as adult. Especially if we are a duly elected public representative.
So Joe Wilson… SHAME ON YOU!
I think emotions are running high on both sides. We held a protest throughout the enite speech. We had Obama lovers come and park their cars right next to us so we could hear the speech. We didn’t want to hear it, that’s why we were protesting. At the end of the protest he apologied and said he was wrong. As much as I don’t want to say this…I will. Congressman Wilson, you need to apologize.

I think you said it – Joe Wilson is a “duly elected public representative.”
And while some may find it revolting or vile, Mr. Wilson was representing his constituents by not allowing them to be lied to on a Public Forum.
There has been much recent talk of the Office of the President and how Holy it Though. We must re-think this and review the founding fathers interpretation of the title. Some early Presidents didn’t want the office for the simple fact it was a title that separated We The People.
While respect is due to another man, the apparent double standards still remain – it is not disrespectful for an Elected Official to stand in front of us and Lie, blatantly and multiple times? Did he not desecrate the office with his actions?

While I do agree that Obama has in many ways desecrated the office of The President, I still not believe a formal meeting in the House is the right place to be unruly. The time would have been in the Republican response that followed.

I’m not sure how you can say Obama has “desecrated” the office. I mean, you can say you disagree with him, that he’s taking the country in the wrong direction, but desecrating?
I think you could argue that both Clinton and Bush desecrated the office, but I just don’t see that with Obama.
