http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+15&version=NIV

Jesus actually said (that God said) that anyone who curses their father should be put to death. This is in the new testament.

You're actually addressing two issues, the problem of things that are self contradictory in the bible, and the things that are attributed to God that are unrighteous. This is generally only a problem if you are a fundamentalist, who believes that everything in the bible must be literally true.

The bible evolved, as does peoples beliefs. The first bible compiled by origen has books we dont have and is missing books we do have. Protestants are missing books that the catholics have (the aporcrypha), although even Martin Luther's first bible still included them in a separate section! Christians have never had complete consensus on what is canonical and whats not.

if you look at the bible as a HUMAN book that explores peoples beliefs and OPINIONS about God, then there's no problem. You can apply reason, morality and even science to interpret it. The problem only arises when you make the book an extension of God himself, and therefore it must be perfect.
